Ashley studied medicine at St. John’s College, University of Cambridge, achieving his undergraduate BA(Hons) in Neuroscience. This was followed by postgraduate studies at St. Bartholomew’s and The London School of Medicine culminating in a Masters degree in Trauma Science.
Following medical school he worked at the European Space Agency in Cologne, Germany helping with the training and medical care of the astronauts at the Astronaut Training Centre and performing research into bone loss in microgravity. He subsequently undertook an Academic Foundation Training Programme in Orthopaedics at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, UK. His research focused on how high intensity exercise modulates pain in high performance athletes.
His early surgical training was undertaken in Oxford on the Thames Valley Rotation. This was followed by higher surgical training on the Percivall Pott Trauma & Orthopaedic Training Programme, London. During this time Ashley focused his elective practice on soft tissue reconstruction of the shoulder and knee combined with an interest in complex trauma of the upper limb.
Ashley achieved his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Trauma & Orthopaedics in 2021. This involved specialist training in the management of peripheral nerve injuries at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, and of sports injuries of the knee and ankle with Professor Francisco Guerra Pinto in Lisbon, Portugal.
Following training he accepted a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic post in London, which he left to take up the Perth Sports Surgery Fellowship.
Outside of work Ashley is a fitness enthusiast who enjoys most sports, particularly soccer, tennis and windsurfing. He has a passion for outdoor pursuits and is a classically trained pianist who continues to play for his own enjoyment.
